Mary Ellen’s Hearth has been serving women and children in our community for over 100 years. Here is a quick history:
1904 – A group of women from Court Street United Methodist Church decided to organize a “day nursery” to assist working mothers.
1914 - North Montgomery Settlement House was built and dedicated to serving needy women, children and families in north Montgomery.
1953 – Relocated to the present location on Clay Street and the name of the organization was changed to the Nellie Burge Community Center as a memorial to Mrs. Nellie Burge, whose husband donated the property.
2000 - State-of-the-art day care facility was opened on the Clay Street property to serve low income residents in the area, primarily in the Riverside Heights housing community.
2010 – With the relocation of the Riverside Heights housing community, the Nellie Burge Community Center altered its mission from providing daycare services to providing transitional housing for homeless women with children. The facility was renovated to create ten independent living units and the ministry was rebranded as Mary Ellen’s Hearth, in memory of Mary Ellen Bullard.
